The word is used very loosely these days, and is understandably confusing. Is it art? Yeah. Is it design? Also yeah. Illustration bridges the gap between art and design. It aims to communicate concepts visually through the artistic mediums but, like design, it is purposeful and solution focused. Art is selfish by comparison, and serves as the expression of the artist him/herself. 

So that begs the question: how is illustration different from commissioned art? Of course some projects might come closer to blurring lines, but there is always purpose to illustration. It has a job to do. As colloquial language rapidly evolves in today’s connected world, the definition of Illustration might depend on who you talk to. The old definition is still true however, and this is the one I adhere to. So even while distinguished from its artsy cousin, the disciplines share their unique human charms and power to move.

There is little more bespoke, unique, and human than what is crafted by hand. If artwork is the creator’s soul made manifest, then illustration provides a soul to the story that it tells.
